Hey mama,
No one prepares you for the emotional weight of that first vaccination. You know it’s necessary. You know it’s for their health. But nothing quite compares to the moment you see your baby’s face twist in pain and confusion for the very first time — and all because you allowed it to happen.
When we took Ollie for his first round of vaccines, my heart broke a little. The nurse was gentle, quick, and reassuring, but the sting still came. His tiny body stiffened, his eyes widened, and then came that heartbreaking cry — the one that starts with silence, mouth open, before the sound even comes out. You know the one.
But here’s what helped: I timed his feeding to happen right after the shots. Holding him close and offering a bottle gave him immediate comfort and helped settle both of us. It didn’t erase the moment, but it softened it.
That’s my gentle tip for new mums: try to time the vaccinations with their feeding. Either nurse or offer the bottle right after the needle — the warmth, the closeness, and the rhythm of feeding can be incredibly soothing.
Another little helper was Ollie’s Baby Ollie “HarmonyPals” Musical Plush & Teether Toy. I brought it with us, and the soft lullaby melodies and the comforting texture became a welcome distraction while we waited and even during the car ride home.
For those of you in Australia, here’s a helpful link to the NSW Health Immunisation Schedule – so you can be prepared for what’s ahead and know exactly what to expect at each stage.
Remember, it’s okay to cry a little too. I did. It means we care deeply. That’s what being a mum is all about.
With empathy and encouragement,
Renata (Ollie’s mum) 💛
