Hi mama,
No one told me how emotional it would be to start solids. I thought it was just about food — you know, picking purees or finger foods, buying cute little spoons, and taking those adorable first-bite pictures.
But the truth? It’s so much more than food.
It’s about feeling like you’re doing a good job as a mum, even when you’re unsure if your baby is eating enough, eating the “right” foods, or — in my case — when you’re scared of choking hazards.
I’ve asked ChatGPT (yes, more than once 😅) about everything from how big to cut things to whether it’s okay to still be offering purees at ten months. Some mums I see on social media are handing their babies big chunks of food by nine months, and here I am, still nervously spoon-feeding puree to Ollie at ten months.
And you know what? That’s okay. We’re all doing what feels safest for our babies — and for us.
The other thing I wasn’t prepared for? The mess. Oh my goodness, the mess. Half the food ends up everywhere except in his mouth. His hands, his face, my clothes, the floor — you name it.
That’s why I am forever grateful for our Baby Ollie “MealBloom” Waterproof Bib Set. After trying so many bibs that either leaked, stained, or didn’t hold up in the wash, these were the first that actually worked. If it weren’t for them, my laundry basket would easily be twice as full every day.
We’re still learning, still experimenting, and yes, still mostly doing purees — but Ollie is growing, healthy, and happy. And that’s all that really matters.
So to any mum reading this who feels unsure or judged: you’re doing great. Feed your baby in the way that works for you. You’ll both figure it out together, one messy meal at a time.
Wishing you fewer spills (and calmer nerves),
Renata (Ollie’s mum)💛
